Aluminium vs uPVC Doors in Dubai's Heat: An Honest Comparison

If you're choosing doors for a Dubai villa, someone has probably told you uPVC is cheaper and someone else has told you aluminium is better. Both are half right. The honest answer depends on what you're building, because a small window behaves very differently from a 4-metre wall of glass in 48°C heat. Here's the real comparison, from a fabricator who works with aluminium every day but will happily tell you when uPVC is the smarter buy.

The one-sentence version

uPVC insulates naturally and costs less on small units. Aluminium is far stronger, spans much bigger openings, and, with a thermal break, matches uPVC's insulation while looking slimmer and lasting longer in extreme heat.

Now the detail that actually decides it for your project.

Strength and span: aluminium wins for doors

This is the big one. uPVC is a soft plastic. To hold large glass it needs bulky frames and internal steel reinforcement, and even then it flexes on wide openings. Aluminium is structurally strong, so it carries big, heavy glass on slim frames without sagging.

For folding doors, slim sliding doors, and any large opening, this is decisive. A slim aluminium frame can span a 6-metre wall and keep running smoothly for years. A uPVC system at that size either isn't available or behaves like a compromise. If your project is a wall of glass onto the garden or pool, aluminium is not really optional.

Insulation: uPVC's old advantage, closed by the thermal break

The traditional knock on aluminium is that metal conducts heat, so it lets the cool out. That was true of cheap, non-broken aluminium, and it's why uPVC earned its reputation as the warmer, cooler material.

Modern aluminium solves it with a thermal break: an insulating barrier built into the middle of the frame that stops heat passing straight through the metal. A thermal-broken aluminium door performs on insulation at a level most homeowners can't tell apart from uPVC, while keeping the slim sightlines uPVC can't match. The catch is that the thermal break has to actually be there. On a hot Dubai quote, "aluminium" with no stated thermal break is the corner most likely to be cut, so ask directly.

Heat, UV and lifespan

This is where Dubai changes the maths. uPVC is a plastic, and plastic and relentless UV are not natural friends. Over years of direct Gulf sun, cheaper uPVC can discolour, become brittle, or warp, especially in darker colours that absorb more heat. Quality uPVC resists this better, but the material is fighting its own nature.

Aluminium doesn't care about UV. Powder-coated aluminium holds its colour and structure through decades of sun, which is a large part of why you see it on almost every serious villa facade in the UAE. For a west-facing wall taking the full afternoon sun, that longevity is worth real money.

Looks and glass area

If the design goal is as much glass and as little frame as possible, aluminium wins comfortably. Its strength lets the frame be slim, so more of the opening is glass. uPVC frames are chunkier by necessity, which reads as heavier and more dated on a large opening. On a small utility window nobody notices. On a feature wall everybody does.

Cost: the honest bit

uPVC is genuinely cheaper on small, standard units. If you're fitting basic windows in a back room or a budget rental, it can be the sensible, cost-effective choice, and we'd tell you that to your face.

Aluminium costs more up front, but on doors and large openings the comparison isn't really like-for-like, because uPVC often can't do the job at all at that size. Factor in the longer lifespan in Dubai's climate and the gap narrows over the years you own the home.

So which should you choose?

  • Large doors, feature openings, anything you want slim and glassy: aluminium, thermal-broken. Not close.
  • A west-facing or sun-blasted elevation: aluminium, for the UV lifespan.
  • Small, standard windows on a tight budget: uPVC is a perfectly reasonable, cheaper pick.
  • A whole villa where you want one consistent look: aluminium, so the big doors and the windows match.

A real example
