What UAE Heat Actually Does to a Door

Most comparison articles are written for European or American climates. The Gulf is a different machine, and it attacks doors in four ways at once:

  • Surface temperature. A door facing west in Dubai can reach 70–80°C at the surface on a July afternoon. Not air temperature — surface temperature. Materials expand, finishes soften, adhesives creep.
  • Daily thermal cycling. That same door drops 40 degrees overnight. It does this roughly 150 times each summer. Expansion and contraction, every single day, is what slowly tears door joints apart.
  • Humidity swings. Coastal humidity regularly crosses 90 percent in August, then indoor air conditioning holds the other face of the door at 55 percent. A door is often the boundary between two different climates at once.

Any door material sold here has to answer for all four. Most marketing only answers for one.

How Wooden Doors Cope

Let's give wood its due first. A well-made solid timber door is beautiful in a way aluminium has to work hard to imitate. It feels substantial, it insulates naturally (wood conducts about 400 times less heat than raw aluminium), and it suits traditional villa architecture — there is a reason carved wooden doors are part of Emirati heritage.

The problems start with physics, not craftsmanship:

Warping and swelling. Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture constantly. In the UAE's humidity cycle, exterior wooden doors swell in August and shrink in January. The symptoms will be familiar to anyone who owns one: a door that sticks in summer, rattles in winter, and eventually won't sit square in its frame. Once a solid door warps past a few millimetres, no amount of planing brings it back permanently.

Finish breakdown. UV destroys varnish and paint films here in 18–24 months on exposed elevations, sometimes faster on west-facing doors. After that, moisture gets under the finish, the timber greys, and the cycle accelerates. Keeping an exterior wooden door looking good in Dubai realistically means sanding and refinishing every one to two years, at roughly AED 800–2,000 per door depending on size and finish.

Termites and rot. Subterranean termites are an active problem in older Dubai communities and anywhere with irrigated gardens. Untreated or poorly treated timber door frames are a favourite entry point. Rot is rarer in this dry climate but does appear at door bottoms where irrigation water or washdown water pools against the threshold.

Hardware creep. As the timber moves seasonally, hinges and locks gradually work loose. Multi-point locks — the standard for security today — are difficult to keep aligned in a door that changes width with the weather.

None of this means wooden doors are bad. It means an exterior wooden door in the UAE is a commitment: quality tropical hardwood or properly engineered timber, marine-grade finishes, deep shade, and a standing maintenance habit. Some owners happily make that commitment for the look. Most, in our experience, regret it by year three.

How Aluminium Doors Cope

Aluminium is boringly stable in exactly the ways this climate punishes:

  • It does not absorb moisture. Zero swelling, zero warping, zero seasonal sticking. A properly installed aluminium door closes the same way in August humidity as it does in a January evening.
  • Powder coating shrugs off UV. Architectural-grade powder coat (60 microns and up) is warrantied for a decade or more against fading and chalking. There is no varnish film to peel — the colour is baked onto the metal. Coastal projects should specify marine-grade coating; that is standard on our systems.
  • Termites have no interest in it. Neither does rot.
  • It holds precision. Because the door leaf never changes dimension, multi-point locks stay aligned for years, and slim modern designs with big glass panels stay square.

Now the honest weaknesses, because aluminium has them:

Raw aluminium conducts heat brilliantly — which is terrible for a door. A cheap aluminium door with no thermal break becomes a radiator in summer: the outside face heats up, and the frame conducts that heat straight into your hallway, where your air conditioning pays for it. This is the single biggest quality divide in the aluminium market. A thermal break — a polyamide insulating barrier inside the profile — cuts that conduction dramatically. In the UAE, a thermally broken profile is not a luxury upgrade; it is the specification. If a quote does not mention it, ask why.

Dents are harder to repair invisibly. Timber can be sanded and refilled; a dented aluminium skin usually means replacing a panel section. In practice this matters more for commercial doorways than villa entrances.

The Middle Path: Woodgrain Aluminium

The comparison used to end with "aluminium performs, wood looks better." That gap has mostly closed. Modern woodgrain finishes — applied by sublimation, where the grain pattern is heat-infused into the powder coat rather than printed on top — give an aluminium door the visual depth of walnut, oak, or teak with none of the maintenance. From two metres away, most visitors cannot tell. The finish carries the same UV warranty as any architectural powder coat, and the door underneath still refuses to warp, swell, or feed termites.

So When Does Real Wood Still Make Sense?

We would honestly steer you to timber in three situations:

  1. Interior doors. Inside air-conditioned space, the humidity cycling that destroys exterior wood barely exists. Solid internal timber doors are lovely and last for decades.
  2. Deeply sheltered entrances. A door under a proper recessed porch, never touched by rain, irrigation, or direct sun, escapes the worst of the cycle. It still needs maintenance — just less often.
  3. Heritage and restoration work, where authenticity is the entire point.

For anything that faces the weather — entrance doors, garden and terrace doors, anything on a coastal plot — the engineering argument for thermally broken aluminium is, frankly, one-sided.

The outside face of any door gets hot in direct Gulf sun — timber included. The question is how much heat reaches the inside. A thermally broken aluminium door keeps the inner face close to room temperature; a cheap non-broken frame will feel warm inside by afternoon. Can wooden doors be treated to survive UAE conditions?

Yes, to a point — pressure-treated engineered cores, marine varnish systems, and deep shade all extend life. You are managing the problem rather than removing it, and the refinishing schedule never goes away.

Which is more secure?

Material for material, a modern aluminium door with a multi-point lock and laminated glass generally out-performs a timber door, mainly because the lock stays aligned and the frame doesn't loosen over time.
